Swearing off cars for four decades has won an Akaroa man a starring role in a Kiwi movie with a conscience.

Earthwhisperers, which celebrates its world premiere this weekend, focuses on 10 New Zealanders out to prove the simplest changes can make a difference to climate change.

One of those 10 is Hugh Wilson, who is an avid biker, even though he is 65-years-old. As far as he is concerned, peddling three hours to attend a meeting in the hills is nothing to break a sweat over.

Hugh says while he did swear off cars, he isn't against the motorcar per se, but is against the total obsession with the vehicle.

He believes cars are destroying the world and as far as he is concerned does not want to be a part of that.

His bicycle is fitted with an odometer - it shows he has already travelled 7000km, which for the movie, makes him a perfect candidate.

The movie is a very Kiwi response to Al Gore's documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth' and is about healing the environment.

It was created by Christchurch director Kathleen Gallagher.

The movie's world premiere is in Christchurch on Sunday and Hugh plans to bike there in five hours.
