She doesn't look a day older than 21, but Barbie is celebrating her 50th birthday in style.

The world-famous doll's big day was celebrated in Australia at an event overlooking Sydney Harbour on Monday.

Australian fashion designer Alex Perry, jewellery designer Stefano Canturi and hairdresser Joh Bailey collaborated with Sweet Art bakers to create an edible 2.1-metre-tall Barbie sculpture.

In their elaborate creation, a mannequin was clad in a couture gown of iced cake topped with coiffure and accessories.

A 50th anniversary Barbie doll was launched to celebrate the icon's half century.

The limited edition doll wears a champagne silk party dress with layers of gold tulle.

Forever Barbie, an exhibition of Barbie's evolving look over the years, will be displayed in a purpose-built Barbie Dream House in Melbourne's Federation Square from June 26.
