Why is it that as a nation, we just adore draping ourselves in black clothing? It really is the quintessential Kiwi look. We even have a magazine called Black!

Picture this ... it may sound familiar. While shopping up a storm, how many of us veer towards the brighter, more intensely coloured version of a garment and then suddenly, violently grab the safer, "non-fuss" black one instead?

Kiwis like to play it safe. It can be quite boring, seeing a sea of gloomy, black-clad bodies out there. Are we all closet goths secretly listening to the Damned and Siouxsie and the Banshees late at night?

You are not alone. At Style Blog we are just as guilty as charged!

But black can be tres chic and it is the favourite hue of the fashion pack. Parisiennes have always had a strong affinity with black and tend to be faultless in their dressing.

The key to wearing black is to not model yourself on a hideously hirsute, grossly obese, Greek mama in full mourning regalia, but to go to the opposite side of the spectrum i.e. sex it up! Think of strong sexy shapes that create a coquettish femme fatale vibe. Think of Helmet Newton models and the work of Guy Bourdin.

Use sexy seductress-like accessories to vamp up your look, such as sky-high, black, strappy patent stilettos that are works of art, a great clutch bag and a sprinkle of sequins.

To complete the look, the necessities are: Chanel rouge noir nail polish, hair that looks like it's had more than a good tumble through the hay and, of course, the obligatory Brigitte Bardot inspired "sex-kitten" smokey and smudged kohled eyes!

And here are some upcoming black pieces from our Kiwi designers... enjoy!
