Satirical newspaper The Onion is apologising to Quvenzhane Wallis after a using a vulgar expletive when referring to the star on Twitter.
"Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c***, right?#Oscars2013," The satirical newspaper tweeted about the nine-year-old star of Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Outraged Twitter followers hit out at the paper over the tweet, and some called for the fake news organisation to identify the culprit.
Chief executive Steve Hannah issued A personal apology to Wallis on Facebook and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars.
"It was crude and offensive - not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting.
"No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humourless comment masquerading as satire."
He said the tweet was taken down within an hour of publishing, and has instigated new and tighter Twitter procedures.
"In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible."
"Miss Wallis you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry," he said.
