There are rumours that tension is high between American Idol judges Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres.

TMZ reports sources from the show saying Cowell and new judge DeGeneres do not get along - and are not hiding it.

DeGeneres is believed to be angry about Cowell's trademark cutting remarks to contestants. The two judges apparently no longer sit next to each other during taping of the show.

DeGeneres, who has her own popular daytime TV talk show (weekdays at 3.00pm on TV ONE), replaced Paula Abdul who quit last year in a contract dispute.

The success of DeGeneres, 52, is seen as key to American Idol's future given slipping ratings since 2006 and the upcoming departure in May of Cowell, arguably one of the show's biggest attractions.

You can check out the supposed tension between the judges yourself - American Idol screens on Fridays at 8.30pm and Saturdays at 7.30pm on TV2.
