The economy hasn't put people off from turning out in their finery for the Boxing Day races.

New Zealand's biggest fixture at Ellerslie, drawing some 20,000 punters.

The weather turned on a blinder, allowing young Aucklanders to dazzle with their race day best.

As the sun beat down, hats abounded, though plenty are at Ellerslie to create a look, instead of some shade.

This is the day that sorts the best dressed from the rest, and the grownups from the innocents.

The Fashion in the Field judges said they were looking for style in picking a winner.

Charlotte Moor beat the field in a silk and chiffon dress with vintage beading and a matching hat, in which her mum was instrumental in design and, clearly very proud too.

Not just the ladies made an effort, but plenty of fine attire, as well as some outrageous attire, was on show from the gentlemen too.

Kel Butler won the prize for the best dressed male.

The supreme award for the best outfit included a shopping spree worth thousands, a spa package, a portrait sitting and a Fiji cruise.

The event also marks the 20th anniversary of the Fashion in the Field competition.
