General Notes
The Waitakere electorate in Auckland's west is a mix of suburban and rural areas. It comprises the coastal settlements between Te Henga (Bethells Beach) and Karekare as well as the western suburbs of Ranui, Henderson and Glendene (west of Great North Rd.). Minor boundary adjustments have seen North Titirangi and Konini transferred out of the electorate.
Of those employed in 2006, 15.2% were technicians and trades workers the fourth-highest percentage of any general electorate and above the national average (12.2%). Of the usually resident population, 30% were born overseas and 17.4% identified with the Pacific Peoples ethnic group, higher than the New Zealand average.
Election Results
The winning candidate in the 2008 election, Paula Bennett (National Party), captured a plurality (44.90%) of the 30,522 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Waitakere electorate. The seat was held in 2005 by Lynne Pillay (Labour Party) with a margin of 4,942. The National Party captured a plurality (41.22%) of the party votes in Waitakere, about 7 percentage points above its party vote share in 2005. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2008 was 79.19%.
