National and Labour have both lost ground in the latest ONE News Colmar Brunton poll - but the drop is more damaging for Labour.
National is down two points but still scores 54%, which is enough for the party to govern alone.
Labour has also dropped back two points to 28%.
The Green Party is steady on 9% and the other minor parties are edging up a little.
New Zealand First scores 2.9%, while the Maori Party (2.1%), Act (1.5%) and United Future (0.8%) have all risen marginally.
Colin Craig's Conservative Party features for the first time on 0.5% and the Mana Party hardly features at all on 0.2%.
Based on the results, National could govern alone with 68 seats.
Using current coalition partners and assuming electorate seats are held, the Maori Party would get four seats, Act would get two and United Future would get one.
Labour would get just 35 seats. After adding 12 from the Greens and one from the Mana Party, they still do not get close to forming a government.
When asked who they would prefer as Prime Minister, 55% of respondents said John Key.
Phil Goff has picked up recently, but at 14% he is still miles behind.
ONE News political editor Guyon Espiner said that while both the major parties were shedding some support to the minor parties, it is far worse for Labour.
"Labour is dropping into the danger zone where it is hard to see how they can rescue this one," he said.
The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1% and was based on a sample of 1000 eligible voters.
