Our Heritage

Our Heritage illustrates the life and times of early New Zealand settlers by means of a Charming Collection of Seven Vignettes. The first 5 utilise the creative writings of the late John T. Diamond whose ballads paint a rhymed history of the New Zealand pioneers, particularly the settlers who earned their living cutting the mighty kauri trees in Auckland's Waitakere Ranges. His ballads are about real people and the hardships that they endured in those raw times. The final 2 vignettes are 'The History of Trams', which covers the first horse drawn trams on wooden tracks in Nelson in 1862 to steam in Christchurch in 1880, electric in Dunedin in 1900, and battery operated trams in Gisborne in 1913, until their demise in 1964, and 'Ferry to Devonport', which takes us back to a time when the last of the kauri ferry boats were still transporting people from Devonport to Auckland, giving us a unique opportunity to see and enjoy the sights of these much loved ferries again.
