Murder-accused David Bain sat through a graphic video in the high court in Christchurch on Wednesday, as the jury was shown footage of his dead family members, in the house where they were found.
Bain is accused of murdering his parents, two sisters and brother in Dunedin in 1994.
The video was taken by a police photographer and shows the murder scenes as well as the layout of the Bain house.
Milton Weir, the officer who ordered the video recording and who was in charge of the scene investigation for the killings, was in the witness box for several hours.
ONE News says the clip shown to jurors was an edited version from raw footage but still contained dramatic images.
The footage showed a cluttered house, in bad state of disrepair.
Weir described the smell in the house as very bad and said his staff had to wear face masks.
In the room where Robin Bain was found on the floor there was a bloodstain on the curtain and a rifle covered in blood with a rifle magazine beside his body.
He had spots of blood on his trousers and blood spots on the rear of his left hand.
The court also heard of the message left on the computer, in an alcove off the room where Robin Bain was found dead.
The message read "Sorry you are the only one who deserved to stay".
In 14-year-old Stephen Bain's room where he was lying on the floor there was a heavily bloodstained bed, and a spent .22 cartridge on the pillow.
Weir says there were obvious signs of a struggle in this room, and the injuries on Stephen were consistent with this.
The mother, Margaret Bain, was lying in her bed with a bullet wound in the area of her left eye.
David Bain's sister Arawa Bain was on the floor of her bedroom with a gunshot wound on her right forehead.
Weir says the doorjambs had bloodstains on them and it was decided to do luminol testing of the house.
He also told of bloody footprints being found in the house.
