David Bain's extended family are taking legal advice over whether he could seek an inheritance following his not guilty verdicts at the High Court in Christchurch last week.

It is uncertain whether Bain could take a share of the family estate of three properties and cash investments now he is a free man, 15 years after the deaths of his parents and three siblings.

Bain's lawyer David Reed QC is not prepared to discuss the inheritance, but says the issue of compensation will be examined in a fortnight.

Bain and his campaigner Joe Karam are expected to leave Christchurch for the North Island on Tuesday.
