Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori is backing Northern Districts teammate BJ Watling to shine on the international stage.

The 24-year-old opening batsman is the bolt selection in Vettori's first squad naming as a selector ahead of the limited overs series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

Vettori said, Watling who averages 37.51 with the bat, has shown he has a hunger for scoring runs.

The Black Caps skipper said he has scored a lot of runs domestically and both John Wright and Mark Greatbatch have been impressed by him.

Vettori and Jacob Oram are the main fitness concerns in the side with both players nursing hamstring injuries.

However, both are expected to be passed fit for the tour.
