New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder returned to cricket at club level on Saturday in the next step in his return from an abdominal injury.

Ryder scored 11 for Naenae against Karori and bowled eight unchanged overs, conceding two runs.

The 25-year-old hasn't played internationally since he was injured at the Champions Trophy tournament in South Africa in September.

A bat for Wellington A against England under-19 in January had been his only competitive outing since and he subsequently underwent an operation to repair his abdominal wall.

He is expected to return to the New Zealand camp for a training stint at the end of the current five-match one-day international series against Australia.

Hard-hitting left-hander Ryder has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League but good recent progress has seen him included in the 30-man extended New Zealand squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies starting in late April.
