A below strength Pakistan side made an impressive start to their cricket tour opener in Queenstown, reducing a New Zealand Invitation XI to 73 for four at lunch on day one of the three-day practice match.
The Invitation side were in early trouble once captain Grant Elliott won the toss and opted to bat, with former Test opener Craig Cumming departing for two in the fourth over.
Incumbent test opener Tim McIntosh laboured to 14 from 60 balls before being bowled by medium pacer Yasir Arafat while BJ Watling (11) and Elliott (3) were the other opening session casualties.
Test batsman Daniel Flynn was unbeaten on 27 at the break alongside James Franklin, who was 11 not out.
Legspinner Danish Kaneria was the most successful bowler with two for 18 from six overs.
Pakistan chose to rest test regulars Kamran Akmal, Shoiab Malik, Mohammad Aamer, Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal from their only lead-up game before the three test series against New Zealand starts in Dunedin on Tuesday.
