Northern Districts wicketkeeper Peter McGlashan grasped a piece of first-class cricket history when gloving a record 12th catch against Central Districts in Whangarei.

McGlashan set a record for wicketkeeping dismissals in New Zealand first-class cricket on Wednesday when he accepted a Brad Patton edged behind during the second day of the Plunket Shield match at Cobham Oval.

The 30-year-old then lifted his match haul to 12 catches and set a world mark when Bevan Griggs sparred at a Graham Aldridge delivery in the third over of Thursday's morning session.

McGlashan's safe hands allowed him to move ahead of 13 other wicketkeepers who had pouched 11 catches, including Zimbabwean Wayne James, who still holds the record for first-class dismissals in a match with 13.

McGlashan had opportunities to level and then exceed James' exploits for Matabeland against Mashonaland CD in 1995-96.

He had one catch ruled out in Central Districts' first innings because Joseph Yovich over-stepped and yesterday he failed to hold an inside edge offered by Mathew Sinclair.

McGlashan started receiving congratulatory calls and text messages during the break in innings today but he was fairly understated about his achievement.

"There's not much you can do as a 'keeper, you just take them as they come to you," he told Radio Sport.

McGlashan said his cause was aided by his bowlers' ability to exploit a bouncy pitch.

"I just had to wait and be patient. There's nothing you can do as a 'keeper unlike a bowler or batsman on the verge of a record.

"I had no idea when it (the record) was going to come so I just had to continue my job of taking every ball that came to me."

McGlashan's accuracy behind the stumps runs in the family.

His step-grandfather Robin Schofield holds Central Districts' record of dismissals in an innings - seven against Wellington in 1964-65.

Wicketkeepers to hold 11 catches include Australia's Rod Marsh and former English captain Alec Stewart.

Meanwhile, James had a memorable match for Matabeleland at Bulawayo in his only first-class appearance. Other than 11 catches and two stumpings he scored 99 and 99 not out.
