New Zealand selectors absent from their duties while playing beach cricket in Australia have been catching up electronically, says convener Glenn Turner.
Turner said selector Dion Nash and selection adviser Mark Greatbatch were able to take a full part in the selection of the New Zealand team named today to play Australia next month despite missing at least two rounds of domestic play.
The pair have been in the eight-strong team of former New Zealand players competing in the lucrative Australian beach cricket competition on Queensland's Coolangatta Beach. The first round of beach matches was played on January 10.
"I think we've been able to cover for that adequately," Turner said.
"They returned two days ago for discussions."
Turner said he and selector John Wright called in national coach Andy Moles to help fill gaps for the two rounds of State Shield matches missed by Nash and Greatbatch.
Turner said the pair could get themselves up to speed with the form of players through New Zealand Cricket's "pooching" system, which videos every game and records detailed statistics on every player.
"You can access percentages of line and length and you can call up all the dismissals, or every ball that is bowled by a bowler," Turner said.
"And every shot that's played by a batsman. The programme is a pretty extensive one."
The "pooching" system is named after the case that carries the electronic equipment which " looks like a dog coming around on the carousel" Turner said.
Nash and Greatbatch will miss the last round of State Shield matches this weekend as it clashes with the beach cricket final.
