Young all-rounder Corey Anderson is the latest Black Cap to be struck down by injury and is heading home from the tour of South Africa.
Anderson broke his thumb while bowling in the nets and will miss the One Day International series against the Proteas.
His injury gives another opportunity to veteran all-rounder Grant Elliott, who hasn't played an ODI since December 2010.
Coach Mike Hesson said that South African-born Elliott was an ideal replacement.
"Grant comes into the squad with invaluable knowledge and experience of South African conditions."
