Australian fast bowler Brett Lee's hopes of pushing for a Test recall via the seven-match limited over series in India have been dashed by an elbow injury that has forced his early return home.

Lee suffered a mild elbow strain during the first match of the series at Vadodara and until Friday had been optimistic of recovering in time to play a significant role on tour.

However, he was still experiencing pain at the team's training session at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground on Friday morning and medical staff have decided that the elbow requires the opinion of a specialist.

Lee is expected to arrive back in Australia on Saturday.

The Australian selectors are yet to decide on a replacement but will need to fly the nominated player in quickly given that game four follows only two days after Saturday's third match.

Lee is the second player to be sent home from the tour due to injury after wicketkeeper Tim Payne fractured a finger in Nagpur.

Australia's rapidly mounting injury tool has been widely attributed to a heavy schedule that in Lee's case was crammed even further by the Twenty20 Champions League.
