A depleted Black Caps side have lost the opening Twenty20 cricket international in Dubai by 49-runs to Pakistan.

Chasing 162 for the win, New Zealand, batting without an injured Aaron Redmond, fell for 112 in 18.3 overs.

Redmond, who took two for 24, suffered a groin injury during his bowling spell after Pakistan lost the toss and were sent in to bat.

Tim Southee, three for 28 and Shane Bond, two for 17, were the pick of the New Zealand bowlers as Pakistan scored 161 for eight in their 20 overs.

However, the New Zealand batting were unable to string any partnerships together and were 67 for five by the 11th over and the end came quickly as Pakistan snapped up the remaining wickets for just 45 runs.

Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori did not play after feeling unwell and vomiting prior to the game.

Northern Districts wicketkeeper-batsman B J Watling was given his international debut.

The second and final Twenty20 match will be played tomorrow morning.
