Australia's loss has proved New Zealand's invaluable gain: a
low-key middle order scrapper who puts a sky-high price on his
wicket. A product of Perth club cricket, Brownlie took
advantage of his Kiwi ancestry and upped sticks across the Tasman,
making his first class debut at the advanced age of 25 for
Canterbury. As if making up for lost time, he was near the
top of the domestic run charts in both of his first two seasons,
averaging more than 50 overall, and began the most summer with a
sparkling career-high 171 against Auckland. Brownlie lacks the
attacking panache of his middle order colleagues but more than
makes up for it with the tenacity and patience that saw him top
score on New Zealand's historic tour of Australia with 196
hard-fought runs. A surprise call-up initially for the
earlier tour of Zimbabwe, Brownlie made 63 on debut in Bulawayo and
has quickly become the rock of an often-unsteady middle order.
