Courageous Gayle can't understand fuss

Chris Gayle can't understand the fuss.

Sure, he became the first West Indian captain to carry his bat through a Test innings.

And yes, his epic unbeaten 165 was one of the greatest by a Windies batsman in Australia.

But why did people expect he didn't have the tenacity to produce such an extraordinary knock, one befitting of a captain courageous?

"Why they wouldn't (sic)?" Gayle said.

"I mean, I have got a triple century and that takes more time, so I have the ability to actually go out there and bat for a long period of time."

Gayle's image of a lazy lefthander intent on blasting bowlers into submission may just be a furphy.

During 441 minutes at the crease in the Windies' second innings in the drawn second Test in Adelaide, Gayle displayed the concentration of a chess master.

He repeatedly turned from temptation: defending loopy spinners; ignoring wide full and short balls designed to attract the big shot which Australia banked on being a matter of time.

"Shot selection is very key for me, and I try and curb my game a bit and try to put the team in a good position - I take up that responsibility," he said.

This from a man who infamously declared this year he wouldn't be sad if Test cricket died; that being captain of the Windies wasn't something he wanted to hang on to.

Gayle rated his gallant ton, his first against Australia, as among his best.

"I always wanted to get a hundred against Australia, I look up to the Australian team as good quality players that I am going up against and I always want to do well," he said.

"I am really happy with the century so hopefully this is the first of many to come."

Gayle's heroics lifted his sagging side to the point they now believe they can eclipse Australia in Perth and level the three-match series at one-all.

The West Indies just have to be "aggressive and smart - those two are the key", Gayle said.

"We definitely can win in Perth, there are no two ways about it - the way we go about this game shows we have the capability of winning," he said.

"It's a big plus for us, we played some good quality cricket right throughout the five days, it's just unfortunate that we couldn't come off with a win - there are a lot of positives to come out of this game."
