Canterbury v Central Districts
Canterbury are battling to avoid an innings defeat after being asked to follow on in their Plunket Shield four-day cricket match against Central Districts at Rangiora Friday.
Central needed just 72.4 overs to claim first innings points by dismissing a fragile Canterbury batting lineup for 171, fours runs short of avoiding being asked to bat again.
At stumps, Canterbury were 38 for two, still 116 runs behind with two days to play.
Resuming this morning on 305 for nine Central's first innings closed at 325 with the exit of Doug Bracewell, who added another 14 runs to his overnight score for a 32 off 40 balls.
Central skipper Jamie How, who scored 90 runs yesterday, had no hesitation asking Canterbury to bat again.
Canterbury's second innings also got off to a dismal start, losing openers Rob Nicol for 10 and Michael Papps for a duck.
Johann Myburgh, 19 and nightwatchman Ryan McCone, 2, resume on Saturday.
Otago v Wellington
If first impressions really do count then Wellington cricketer Stewart Rhodes has won over a lot of new friends.
But they are perhaps not among the Otago team who bore the brunt of his blade on Friday as the Plunket Shield newcomer helped himself to an unbeaten 142 on the second day of a four-day match in Queenstown.
Rhodes' stunning performance on his first-class debut helped the visitors to 391 for six in their first innings before declaring, then Neil Broom took centre stage to hit a pugnacious 103 not out and guide Otago to 247 for six in response by the close.
The main kudos went to allrounder Rhodes, who became just the 11th player to score a century on his Wellington debut, and the first since Stephen Fleming in 2001-02.
He resumed this morning on 64 alongside Luke Woodcock on 34 as Wellington looked to build on the solid foundations laid yesterday when they made 256 for four.
