Two New Zealand cricketers have been punished for misconduct after a kind gesture backfired on tour in India earlier this year.
The unnamed pair were questioned at a police station in Chennai after sparking a riot while trying to give money to the poor, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has admitted it did not disclose the incident during the August tour by the New Zealand A team.
The duo had been drinking and were in breach of their curfew when they decided to withdraw money from a cash machine and hand it out to passers-by.
A crowd quickly formed and, according to sources, a full-scale riot broke out.
Police intervened and detained the men. But once they realised the pair were New Zealand cricketers, they were put into a taxi and sent back to their hotel.
Internal matter
There were no travelling journalists with the team and the matter was dealt with internally.
New Zealand Cricket Players Association boss Heath Mills said the account of events was the "action-packed" version but was accurate.
"Two players were charged with misconduct, but it's not my place to reveal the details or the punishment," Mills said.
Last week it was revealed that Jesse Ryder faced a New Zealand Cricket (NZC) hearing over his conduct at the recent Champions Trophy tournament in South Africa.
It stemmed from an incident after the match against Sri Lanka, when Ryder smashed a chair with his bat while walking off the pitch following his dismissal.
That cost him 15 percent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council's (ICC) code of conduct.
He later charged by NZC for misconduct for abuse when he was reprimanded by Black Caps manager Dave Currie.
No details of the hearing or any punishment have been released.
