Black Caps shut up shop after Windies fielding success

Published: 6:36AM Friday August 03, 2012 Source: Fairfax

New Zealand are staring down the barrel of another heavy defeat, in the second test against the West Indies at Jamaica's Sabina Park.

Inserted by Windies captain Darren Sammy, the Black Caps' innings started badly and never got a huge amount better as they were bowled out for 260 inside 83 overs.

That left the home side having to bat five overs before stumps, which Chris Gayle and Kieran Powell safely negotiated for the addition of 11 runs.

Story continues below...

BJ Watling, opening in place of the injured Daniel Flynn, flirted with disaster from the outset. He twice nicked deliveries into the cordon, only for them to fall short of the waiting catchers, before sending a third straight to Gayle at first slip.

He'd made two and was closely followed back to the pavillion by Brendon McCullum, who was caught behind for nought after getting a useful delivery from Tino Best, who'd come into the Windies side for Ravi Rampaul.

Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill then added 113 for the third wicket. Taylor was looking increasingly frisky outside the offstump and having engaged in a few animated words with Best, gave the bowler the last laugh.

Best banged a ball in short which nipped back at Taylor but, with his adrenalin flowing, the Black Caps captain had no thought other than to hit the delivery to the fence. The ball got too close to Taylor and all he succeeded in doing was getting a healthy edge through to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

The skipper had made 60, when a total more like 160 was required.

Guptill was still looking good, though, and posted his own half-century soon after. But that was as good as New Zealand's innings got.

Kane Williamson pushed part-time off spinner Narsingh Deonarine to Sammy at slip and then Dean Brownlie came and went for nought. From bad, things went to worse as Guptill got himself run out.

Kruger van Wyk had called him through for a single, Guptill was slow going and Best threw down the stumps at the striker's end from extra cover.

Doug Bracewell and van Wyk were both bowled the former by Sunil Narine and latter by Deonarine and from 114 for two, New Zealand had slumped to 202 for eight.

Tim Southee was next to go. He'd come into the side for the injured Daniel Vettori, while Trent Boult was preferred to Chris Martin, as the Black Caps looked to replicate the formula of four fast bowlers and no spinner which saw them beat Australia in Hobart last year.

Southee had his customary swish at the slow bowlers, but didn't hang around once Roach came back on. Having made a brisk 18, he meekly fended Roach to Sammy at second slip to give the Jamaican fast bowler his third wicket of the innings.

The last pair of Neil Wagner and Boult added 35 for the 10th wicket, before Wagner become Roach's fourth victim. He'd made 23, leaving Boult 14 not out and and the Black Caps all out for a total that would have been even more modest had the tail not wagged a bit.

Roach took four for 70, but Best was probably the most impressive of the Windies' bowlers, finishing with two for 40 from his 16 overs.
