Some of Australia's leading newspapers and their readers launched a series of scathing attacks against under-fire Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson on Thursday.
In the aftermath of the Black Caps' epic two-wicket win over Australia in Napier on Wednesday night the Aussie press' main focus was Johnson's meltdown, which saw him head-butt Kiwi batsman Scott Styris' helmet during the 46th over, which eventually led him to losing 60% of his match fee.
The Sydney Morning Herald headlined their lead sport story "Mitch loses his head" and cricket writer Wil Swanton mocked Johnson for his aggressive action by saying that "Styris felt no pain - he was wearing a helmet."
The Daily Telegraph in Sydney meanwhile asked its readers to comment on the incident and many of them didn't hold back.
Jakedasnake of Sydney uni wrote "Johnson what the hell do you think your going to achieve walking up to a guy who smashed you all over the show? Is you head so far up there that while under the pump you have to try and intimidate people, not with the ball but with stand over like tactics, MATE harden up."
While Mordey of the Gold Coast thought the incident deserved more punishment by writing: "time for a big suspension for the over-rated Mitchell Johnson. Second ugly incident this summer."
Indeed that sentiment was shared by a lot of the Daily Telegraphs readers. In a running poll 80% believe Johnson should be suspended.
