Stand-in Black Caps captain Ross Taylor is urging the second tier of players to take the chance to forge their own path without Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum to rely on.

McCullum and Vettori are both missing from the current warm-up tour in Darwin and will miss the one day tri-series in Sri Lanka.

Taylor says the pair are a huge part of the team, but their absence will allow others to step-up.

He says someone like Martin Guptill, who has now been in the side for awhile but is fairly quiet, should take the chance to contribute more.

After a nine run win on Monday, the Black Caps play touring side Maharashtra in a second one dayer today.
