Jacob Oram's career in cricket is again up in the air after suffering another potentially serious knee injury.
The 32-year-old all-rounder has been forced to return home from the Black Caps tour of Sri Lanka to see a specialist tomorrow morning.
Oram suffered the injury after the Black Caps first -up win over India in the tri-series two weeks ago.
"Jake had done everything possible to try and get ready for the remaining matches in the tri-series but Jake and the medical team had insufficient time to get fully fit, Black Caps coach Mark Greatbatch said.
At this stage it is unclear how severe the injury is and he will return to New Zealand for further assessment and rehabilitation.
It's a devastating blow for Central Districts who look set to lose another star for next month's rich Champions League.
Coach Alan Hunt admits Oram must now be thinking of retirement and thinks the same thought must be going through his head, considering he has had so many injuries.
Oram retired from Test cricket late last year after ongoing battles with injury and he hoped a reduced workload would allow him to prolong his international playing career.
Oram's Black Caps meanwhile team mates take on India tonight, for a shot at Sri Lanka in the tri-series final.
