Iain O'Brien's plans to help New Zealand to a series victory over Pakistan in his final cricket Test had a potential setback on Wednesday when he aggravated a finger injury.

O'Brien left fielding practice early here at McLean Park, nursing his right hand after taking part in outfield drills.

The 33-year-old seamer dislocated the middle finger of his bowling hand during the latter stages of New Zealand's 32-run victory in the first Test in Dunedin.

He played in the second Test defeat at the Basin Reserve last week, revealing part way through the match Friday's series finale would be his last game of international cricket.

O'Brien fields with a guard on the finger but it was still jolted by the impact of a ball.

He was assessed by medical staff and was said to be fit for selection alongside fellow pace bowlers Chris Martin and Daryl Tuffey.

Tim Southee, added to the squad when Shane Bond withdrew after the first Test with an abdominal tear, is the stand-by fast bowler.

O'Brien is moving to the United Kingdom before Christmas to be with his English-based wife Rosie.
