New Zealand won the first one-day international against Zimbabwe
by 90 runs in Dunedin this afternoon.
Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor gleefully won the toss at a
blustery and cold University Oval, and immediately sent the Black
Caps into bat on a green pitch.
The tourists did well to bowl the Black Caps out for 248 in 48.2
overs, with opener Martin Guptill top-scoring with 70 runs off 66
balls.
Shingi Masakadza inflicted the bulk of the damage ending with
figures of 4-46 off 9.6 overs.
Guptill was chiefly responsible for steadying the ship for the
Black Caps, as the home side found themselves in a very precarious
position at 4/2 in the second over after Brendon McCullum departed
for a duck.
Kane Williamson and Guptill put on 88 runs for the third wicket,
putting some respectability on the scoreboard for the Black Caps at
92/3 in the 17th over.
But wickets fell with regularity and no momentum was able to be
created.
Guptill's outstanding innings came to an end as he exited in the
24th over, cleaned out after another full delivery from Elton
Chigumbura pitched up and beat his forward drive to take the
wicket.
Youngster Tom Latham exited in the 29th over on 24 runs after
falling victim to a Chigumbura ball, sending a big edge outside
off-stump in to the waiting hands of keeper Tatenda Taibu.
Williamson reached 36 from 53 balls before being caught and
bowled by Masakadza.
Dean Brownlie chanced his arm and was run out by Chakabva in the
33rd over with 19 runs to his name.
Nathan McCullum (30) and Andy Ellis (33) offered some late
resistance but the innings slumped as Kyle Mills and Tim Southee
contributed a handful of runs before the end came.
Zimbabwe's opening pair of Hamilton Masakadza and Stuart
Matsikenyeri could only manage 10 runs before they were both back
in the hutch, and Regis Chakabva added two before heading back to
the pavilion.
Their skipper Taylor stayed at the crease to fight for a 58 off
68-ball stand, and looked to be their only hope, before he went in
the 26th over.
Number 10 batsman Raymond Price finished 26 not out, and frustrated
the Black Caps with a few lusty blows, and a reverse sweep to the
boundary.
Spinner Rob Nicol, although not a successful day with the bat (0),
made up for it two-fold with the ball, taking 4-19.
