Northern Districts opener BJ Watling has become the man the New Zealand cricket selectors are pinning their hopes on to help solve their top order crisis.
Having made his limited overs debut last month in the United Arab Emirates, Watling has been called in to the Black Caps squad for Friday's third and final test against Pakistan in Napier.
Watling said his experience in the UAE will help ease him into the Black Caps environment.
Adding getting a taste for international cricket a month ago was ideal and he has a fair idea of what to expect.
Watling is expected to open the batting with Tim McIntosh, with Martin Guptill dropping to three and Daniel Flynn to five.
Carter disappointed
Meanwhile, Canterbury coach Bob Carter has reacted with disappointment to Peter Fulton's omission from the Black Caps squad.
Fulton has been dropped to make way for Watling, and will now turn out for Canterbury on Tuesday in their one day match against Central Districts in Rangiora.
Carter said it is a shame Fulton has missed out.
"He obviously would have liked to have done better, I'm sure, in his four knocks and I'm a little bit disappointed for him that he's not getting another opportunity to do that".
Carter is predicting that Fulton will quickly rediscover some form at domestic level. He says the 30-year-old knows what he needs to do to stay in the selectors' thoughts and has already proven he can score big centuries in four day matches
Tuesday's other domestic fixtures see Otago hosting Wellington in Queenstown while Auckland is at home to Northern Districts at Colin Maiden Park.
