A Test century on debut beckoned against Pakistan in Napier when
the heavens intervened and - although he couldn't replicate the
same attractive strokeplay in the series against Australia in
2010 - he did blunt the Aussie attack with a series of starts.
A handy back-up wicketkeeper and an athletic in-fielder, Watling's
all-around skills appeal in a squad situation.
