Bangladesh are on the brink of losing the one-day cricket series to New Zealand after posting a modest 183 for eight in the second match in Dunedin on Monday.

Routed by 146 runs in the first game of the three-match series, Bangladesh underperformed again at University Oval after being invited to bat first despite a fighting 86 from Mushfiqur Rahim.

Rahim rebuilt the innings in a seventh wicket partnership of 101 with Naeed Islam after Bangladesh started abysmally, slumping to 25 for five as rookie fast bowler Andy McKay unsettled them with an aggressive spell of short pitched bowling.

McKay's opening spell of seven overs rewarded him with two wickets for four runs, and Bangladesh never threatened to fully recover.

The Wellington left-armer had opener Tamim Iqbal parrying behind for one off a short ball then knocked captain Shakib Al Hasan's middle stump out of the ground with a full delivery.

Needless run out

The needless run out of Imrul Kayes for nine did not help the tourists' cause, Daryl Tuffey pulled in a sharp return catch off Mohammad Ashraful and when Ian Butler's second ball had Aftab Ahmed caught behind the top order had disintegrated.

Bangladesh eventually saw out their full 50 overs, with the topscoring honours going to Rahim, the 21-year-old working diligently during a stay of 107 balls for his fifth one-day half-century.

Rahim reached the milestone with the first six of the innings, over the long on fence off Tuffey in the 45th over, and finished with seven fours and three sixes in an example worth following for his teammates.

He enjoyed a facesaving stand with Naeem, who contributed an invaluable 43 before a wild slog undid him in the 48th over.

McKay returned for a second spell and ended his 10 overs with the outstanding figures of two for 17 in just his second one-day game for his country.

His other bowling colleagues were mostly tidy at worst, with Vettori going wicketless but conceding just 25 runs from his full complement of overs while Butler had three for 45 after takling some stick towards the end.
