Liam in the middle

The Background:

Liam and his pregnant partner Maria are planning a wedding, but there's a fly in the ointment in the form of Carla Connor. Actually, Carla's more of a spider than a fly.

She's the widow of Liam's brother Paul and his business partner, but Carla wants more. As for what Liam wants; says he's in love with Maria, but his love hate relationship with his sister-in-law is crackling with sexual tension and jealousy.

When it comes to Carla and Maria - it's a pure hate-hate relationship. And as the wedding date draws near the rivalry intensifies.

While Liam remains blissfully unaware, the two contenders declare war on his doorstep.

It's a classic love triangle, but just to add to the mix, Carla's also dating her other business associate, the wealthy and desirable Tony Gordon.

The story continues:

With Liam still recovering from his fall, Tony's beginning to get feed up with the amount of attention Carla's giving her brother-in-law. Carla mocks him for being jealous of an invalid. Later Tony hints at his worry to Maria who tries to cover that the two Connors can't stand each over.

Maria seeks her own reassurance when she worries to Liam that she's rushing him into the wedding. Liam protests and says he loves her and can't wait to be her husband.

Maria tries to keep Liam laid up away from work and away from Carla but when she gets home she finds Carla there, apparently discussing Ryan.

Maria's not pleased to hear that Liam can't make appointments to view wedding venues as he's going on a business trip with Carla.  Maria begins to think that Carla is planning the trip just to wind her up.

Carla books a room for their overnight stay, and when it turns out to be a double booked under in Mr and Mrs Connor she doesn't correct it. When they arrive they discover the "mistake" but there are no other rooms available.

As Liam showers Carla answers the phone to Maria and enjoys letting on about the shared room. With Liam clad in only a towel the sexual tension between the two rises, but they laugh it off. Liam goes to head home but Carla convinces him to stay for a drink. However the moment is broken when Tony arrives unexpectedly and Liam heads off.

Maria's happy to have Liam home early until Carla comments that it was lucky Tony turned up. After seeing Carla goading Maria, Michelle tells Liam. Liam tells Carla to lay off.

Carla continues her jibes in front of Liam's parents and makes trouble at Maria's hens' night. Michelle warns Carla telling her that Maria's been sensitive ever since Liam called out for Carla after the accident. Michelle's revelation only serves to intensify Carla's feelings for Liam.
As Maria heads off to stay at Audrey's before the wedding Carla visits Liam and says they need to confront the feelings between them. Liam denies he feels anything for her, and she tells him about calling her name after the accident. Carla points out that he hasn't said he doesn't love her and urges Liam to be truthful before it's too late.

Maria's worried on the morning of the wedding, and confides her fears to Fiz. Carla's dressed to outdo the bride and, on edge, picks a fight with Tony, ending things with him.
