Kiwi teenagers appear to be kicking the smoking habit.

A survey of 30,000 fourth form students across the country by anti-smoking group ASH, show that smoking among teenagers decreased significantly in the past two years.

ASH director Trish Fraser says about 15% of fourth film girls smoke daily compared to 17% in 1999, while about 12% of boys describe themselves as regular smokers.

The survey also shows smoking declined significantly among Asian and European girls, and Maori and European boys.

ASH believes that the 20% increase in the price of cigarettes may have contributed to the decrease.
