The party pill industry, in an attempt to stave off a complete ban, has offered up a code of conduct regulating itself.

Party pills have been under fire, with opponents saying they're entrenching the drug culture in New Zealand.

The active ingredient in party pills, BZP, has been outlawed overseas and for some months the Government has been investigating the idea of prohibition here.

Those in the party pill industry say prohibition hasn't worked overseas, and they hope the new code will allow them and the Government to find common ground.

Matt Bowden of the Social Tonics Associatin says regulation is a more effective way of protecting the public than banning party pills altogether.

He says BZP is the safe version of methamphetamine, and with more than 24 million of the pills sold, the market is obviously there.

Bowden says the draft code was delivered to Associate Health Minister Jim Anderton earlier this week.
