The opposition National MP, Brian Neeson has ruled out quitting Parliament early to force a by-election in his Waitakere seat.

Speculation has been mounting at Parliament about Neeson's plans after National chose another candidate for his seat, to be re-named Helensville with new boundaries.

Neeson says that he has no plans whatsoever to force a by-election although he is considering standing as an independent against the National candidate at the General Election.

He says he would not want a vacancy in his seat to be used as an excuse by the Government to bring forward the General Election, which is due in six or seven months' time.

A by-election does not have to be held if the Prime Minister declares a General Election is less than six months away and 75% of MPs vote against one.
