The travel industry say the instability in Fiji is having dire consequences for tourism.

It says Suva is now classed high risk.

The government says it cannot guarantee New Zealander's safety if the situation should deteriorate, and if it does, it may warn against any travel to Fiji at all.

The Pacific nation's normally bustling tourist centres are now ghost-towns as the situation worsens.

New Zealand tourist David Benson-Cooper is in Nadi and says it is super quiet as tourists decide to stay away.

He says staff have been laid off and they are all expecting a pretty grim Christmas.
