Northland police investigating the gunpoint abduction and robbery of a honeymooning Dutch couple and the rape of the woman, have made a significant breakthrough.

The newlywed Dutch couple were allegedly abducted by two men in their van from the parking lot at Haruru Falls in the Bay of Islands nearly two weeks ago. They were driven throughout Northland at gunpoint before being dumped on the side of the road.

It is understood police have been carrying out interviews at the Kaitaia police station.

They are not saying what the breakthrough is.

They will be releasing that information on Wednesday morning.
