Diabetes New Zealand says a report on primary health care confirms the need for a diabetes register.
A report by the Auditor-General tabled in parliament says the Ministry of Health and District Health Boards need to collect data on the disease, and use it to assess health needs.
Don Beaven from Diabetes New Zealand says because diabetes is a lifelong disease with serious related conditions, good data on how many people have it and how they are treated is vital.
Beaven suggests setting up a committee to to monitor whether diabetes treatments are successful.
