Porirua residents have called for a halt to the taser gun trial in their community.

It came during an emotionally charged meeting on Thursday night.

Porirua and Manukau City are two areas where police will have access to tasers from Friday.

Porirua City Councillor Taima Fagaloa says the meeting was held to try to educate the community about the new weapons.

She says there are high numbers of Pacific Islanders in the area, and there is fear of the impact a taser might have.

Fagaloa says in particular there was concern about the effect on pregnant women and those with medical conditions.
