What a Promotions Director does -
Writing, producing and directing on-air promotional trailers for
programmes requires a unique blend of creative skill and business
acumen. Promotions Directors view programmes before they go to air
and create a teaser/trailer for the show that will encourage
viewers to watch the programme.
Why I like being a Promotions Director -
"Great actors. Superb storylines. Brilliant locations. It doesn't
matter how good a show is if no-one's watching. That's why everyday
we strive to put more butts on sofas and get more eyeballs in front
of TV sets. When it comes to delivering a television audience to a
programme, a massive number of people make their decisions from
television promos. That's why good promotion isn't a luxury, it's a
necessity." Russell Bartlett, Senior Promotions Director
What qualifications do I need to be a Promo Director?
Promotions Directors come from a wide range of backgrounds and
disciplines. Those presently working in the department have come
from areas such as ad agencies, other broadcasting networks and
even theatre. The most important skill for a promo director is to
have the capacity to align creative vision with commercial
imperatives.
