The Electricity Commission thinks a plan for new wires bringing electricity into Auckland is likely to prove acceptable.

Transpower withdrew its controversial 400-kilovolt line which excited both protesters and an Electricity Commission veto, only to develop a step by step version of the same thing.

Commission chair Roy Hemmingway says this alternative is being worked on now.

Hemmingway says policy changes just announced by the government will not prove decisive here.

But Transpower says the policies, which stress renewable energy, competitive electricity supplies for Auckland and energy security, all support the plan for a grid upgrade.
