United States President George Bush says an international force must be despatched quickly to Lebanon.

Following a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bush said the goal of their two countries was to achieve a "lasting peace" in the region.

Bush says he is in favour of a swift United Nations resolution leading to the deployment of a multi-national stabilisation force in southern Lebanon.

He also warned that a ceasefire would not work unless measures are put in place to stop the conflict happening again.

Blair says the international force can only work if Hizbollah allows it to do so and if the governments of Israel and Lebanon agree as well.

He says the crisis is growing on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border.

Bush also announced US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will return to the region tomorrow for talks with Lebanese and Israeli leaders.
