Telecom has named Wayne Boyd to take over its chairmanship from Roderick Deane from July 1.

Boyd is already a director of Telecom and is also chairman of Auckland International Airport, Meridian Energy and Freightways.

He says he plans to walk and work with government and make sure Telecom can compete fairly in the new environment.

Deane announced earlier this month that he would step down but rejected suggestions that his departure was prompted by Telecom's falling share price or by government plans to force it to open its network to competitors.
