Internet regulator ICANN has rejected a proposal to create a domain for pornography websites.
The idea for the xxx domain was first put forward five years ago and a final decision has been delayed several times.
Advocates argued it would make it easier to avoid sex sites, while opponents said it would legitimise pornography.
The board of ICANN voted on Thursday nine to five against setting up the domain.
A New Zealand representative on the board, Peter Dengate-Thrush, says the majority believed the proposal would not meet enforcement and compliance conditions.
