Vodafone says it's lifting the bar in the third-generation market, planning to launch a wireless broadband service in September.
Vodafone says the new service is significantly faster than the broadband service currently available in New Zealand but will initially be limited to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Vodafone director of business markets Phil Patel says the planned service's top speed of 3.6 megabytes per second is far beyond Telecom's theoretical top speed of 2.1 megabytes per second.
Vodafone says it's also cutting its prices, offering $49 for a gigabyte of data from Thursday for users of its existing high-speed wireless 3G service.
