Waikato FC defender Che Bunce has doubled the number of New
Zealand players at the Knights after agreeing a one-year deal on
Saturday.
The 29-year-old Bunce joins fellow New Zealand international Noah
Hickey in the squad that is undergoing a major off-season overhaul
ahead of the second A-League season that kicks off later this
year.
"I am looking forward to what is a return to professional football
for me after a couple of seasons with Waikato in the NZFC," Bunce
told the NZ Knights website.
"This news is great after a few weeks of good discussion and
negotiation with the club. I am looking forward to working with
Paul Nevin to help deliver on the huge potential that the Knights
clearly have and in doing so make an impact on the A-League but
also football here in New Zealand."
Knights caretaker manager Paul Nevin is pleased to have secured
Bunce.
"Che will bring a great deal to this club on and off the park. He
is a 'no excuses' sort of player, a bit of an old fashioned centre
back if you like that will play with 100 per cent commitment
week in week out.
"The fact he is a Kiwi will also bring something to the dressing
room. I'm delighted to have signed a player whose trademark will be
determination and passion, something other players can feed
off."
Bunce played for the now defunct Kingz franchise in the NSL from
1999-2002.
Bunce and Hickey will be joined by off-season Knights recruits
Scott Gemmill - a former Scotland international, Richard Johnson -
who played for the Newcastle Jets in the A-League last season and
24-year-old Australian age-group goalkeeper Michael Turnbull.
Manager John Adshead left the club last week.
