Departing Knights football manager John Adshead says the decision to stand down and retire from the game was his alone.

The Knights finished last in the inaugural season of the Australian A-league and Adshead, who took the All Whites to the 1982 World Cup, told the club over the weekend he was retiring citing personal reasons.

He says part of that is his health, but it was his decision.

Adshead says he is not abandoning a sinking ship and believes the Australian A-League club is in good hands.

He has decided to retire after just one year in charge, a year when they managed just one win and finished last, but Adshead is adamant the competition is the best thing for the game here and the club's future is looking bright..

Adshead says he is looking forward to playing more golf in retirement.
