It is ten years since the Domestic Violence Act came into force in New Zealand.
But violence in the home still worries Principal Family Court Judge Peter Boshier. In a hui on the issue on Monday, he called the statistics disturbing.
In the seven weeks to January 3 this year, six women were killed by their partners or former partners. During December and January there was nearly one incident of family violence every eight minutes with about 6,000 children witnessing the incidents.
South Auckland barrister, Catriona MacLennan, says the Domestic Violence Act has been a disappointment in practice.
A review of the act will begin this year.
