The MidCentral District Health Board has signed a contract with Southern Cross Hospital that will cut the waiting time for more than 800 patients needing cardiology treatment in Manawatu.

The contract will speed up treatment for 350 patients needing specialist assessment and tests and 500 needing diagnostic tests.

The testing will be carried out at either Palmerston North Hospital or Wellington's Wakefield Hospital.

Internal medicine group manager Lindsay Bates says MidCentral is also working to boost cardiology services at Palmerston North Hospital, with a major review underway.

She says two new cardiologists have been recruited and both should have arrived  by the end of March.
